Queensland Valuation

is our latest mapping and data application and is implemented inside the Google Earth™ application. As an interactive online tool, Queensland Globe allows you to view and explore Queensland maps, imagery (including up-to-date satellite images) and other spatial data.

The Queensland Globe is part of the Queensland Government’s open data strategy.

Information available

Inside Queensland Globe you are able to access maps, data and imagery of Queensland, including Queensland Government-owned data and data used under licence from other parties.

Some of the layers you can choose to view include:

  • places (e.g. population centre, suburb)
  • boundaries (e.g. coastline, local government, electorate, postcode)
  • roads (e.g. arterial road, minor road)
  • rail (e.g. railway line, railway station)
  • transport (e.g. ferry, mall, busway, path, track)
  • addresses
  • land parcel (e.g. property boundary, property label)
  • land parcel tenures (e.g. freehold, national park, state forest, state land).


Installing Queensland Globe for Mac or PC

Follow these instructions to install the interactive Queensland Globe mapping plug-in for Google Earth™ on your desktop or laptop computer.

Instructions for installing Queensland Globe on Mac or PC

New Google Earth™ users, download and install the latest, free Google Earth™ application.
Existing Google Earth™ users, update to the latest version (version 7.0.2 or newer) of Google Earth™.
Save the qldglobe.kml file to your computer by clicking on the link and selecting ‘Save File’. Browsers will normally default to your Downloads folder, desktop or the last location you saved a file to.
make sure the file name is ‘qldglobe.kml’. If it says ‘qldglobe.xml,’ then change the name to ‘qldglobe.kml.’
Go to the file location and double click on the file. The file will open in Google Earth™.
In ‘Layers,’ expand the Queensland Globe layer and then select the datasets you wish to view.

If you are unable to download the .kml file, you can use this qldglobe.zip file by downloading it in the same way as in step 3, then double clicking on the file and extracting the .kml files to your computer.

Note: Once you have installed the Queensland Globe, you can also open other globes and maps.

To access the Queensland Globe for G20, read the instructions for downloading to Mac, PC or laptop.

Follow these instructions to install the interactive Queensland Globe mapping app on your Android or Apple smartphone or tablet.

While the Queensland Globe application is free, data charges may be incurred from your telecommunications carrier.


Instructions for iPhone and iPad devices

  1. Visit the App Store and download the latest Google Earth™ application.
    Note: System requirements are in the application description.
  2. If you have an earlier version of Google Earth™ installed you will need to update to the latest version.
  3. Open the Google Earth™ app and go to the menu.
  4. Go to Settings’ and open ‘Servers.’
  5. Add the server URL http://globe.information.qld.gov.au/qldglobemobile and click ‘Done’ when finished.
  6. Select the tick box next to the new URL to change the server from ‘Default’ to ‘qldglobemobile.’

  7. Go back to the main menu (Settings > Back > Menu).
  8. Queensland Globe layers and sub-layers can be selected or deselected as required.

  9. After you exit Google Earth™, the next time you relaunch, select the qldglobemobile URL as your server.

  10. If the server does not appear then repeat the steps above to load Queensland Globe.

Instructions for android phones and tablets

  1. Visit the Play Store, download and install the latest Google Earth™ app.
    Note: System requirements are in the application description.
  2. If you have an earlier version of Google Earth™ installed you will need to update to the latest version.
  3. Open Google Earth™ and go to ‘Menu > Settings’ and open ‘Databases.’
  4. Add the server URL http://globe.information.qld.gov.au/qldglobemobile and click ‘OK.’
  5. Select the new URL to change the server from ‘Default’ to ‘qldglobemobile’ and click on the back arrow to exit.
  6. Upon restart of Google Earth™ you may need to select the qldglobemobile database URL to access the Queensland Globe layers.
  7. Select the layers icon to select and deselect layers as required.

Troubleshooting

  • If Google Earth™ displays undesirable results or has performance issues restart the application.
  • If this does not resolve the issue, select ‘Clear Cache’ from the ‘Settings’ menu.
  • To increase performance, turn off the preset Google layers each restart

Recommended settings for Google Earth

When using Google Earth™ for the first time, the following settings are recommended (accessed by clicking on ‘Tools’ and then ‘Options’ in the top menu bar).

  • Set ‘Units of Measurement’ to ‘Meters, Kilometers.’
  • Set ‘Terrain’ to Elevation Exaggeration of ‘1’ (normal).

  • Set the ‘Navigation’ to ‘Do not automatically tilt while zooming.’

  • Set the ‘Display’ to ‘Show web results in external browser.’

Saving setting changes

After making the changes above you must click on the ‘Apply’ button, followed by the ‘OK’ button at the bottom of the form.

Improving the viewing speed of layers

Depending on the graphics card of your device, speed for viewing layers will differ. Performance may be improved by turning off the following options under ‘View’ in the menu bar:

  • atmosphere
  • sun
  • historical Imagery
  • water Surface.

Cache tab

Over time, temporary internet files build up in cache and eventually slow down response. To alleviate this problem, we recommend that you regularly clear these files.

To do this, click on the ‘Clear memory cache’ and ‘Clear disk cache’ buttons.
